<purpose>This dataset is the work of Niek Gremmen and Ruerdje Lenna Halbertsma who visited Tristan da Cunha in 2007. It also includes an update from Kelvin Floyd (Indigena Biosecurity International) in 2023 and Bradley Myer (Indigena Biosecurity International) 2025. These surveys are part of a broader programme of works to prioritise and manage alien plants</purpose>
<introduction><para>This fieldwork followed the extensive 2007–2008 survey conducted by Gremmen and Halbertsma, who identified 137 alien vascular plant species and documented the threats they pose to the island’s unique endemic biodiversity and agricultural production. Two subsequent assessments were carried out under the Darwin Plus initiative (DPLUS191) through the Building Capacity for Invasive Plant Management across Tristan’s Northern Islands project, undertaken by Kelvin Floyd in 2023 and Bradley Myer in 2025. Given the limited time available, the aim of these two visits was not to conduct another extensive survey, but rather to reassess the extent of previously prioritised species and to identify any additional alien species of concern. During their assessments, Kelvin and Bradley surveyed the distribution where possible of the species identified by Gremmen and Halbertsma, and recorded a combined total of 33 additional alien species. This brings the total number of introduced plant species recorded on Tristan da Cunha to 170. It includes agricultural species (beneficial and undesirable), garden plants and escapees, and horticultural species (beneficial and undesirable).</para></introduction>
<gettingStarted>These surveys and this dataset are the result of human observations in 2007, 2023 and 2025. </gettingStarted>

<para>Rapidly spreading invasive plant species threaten unique biodiversity values and community livelihoods in the Tristan archipelago. This project will eradicate all known New Zealand Flax plants on Inaccessible Island World Heritage Site, plus train and enable a Tristan-led eradication of all emergent Pōhutukawa trees and self-sown Monterey pine on Tristan itself. A comprehensive survey of all Tristan’s other invasive plants will provide Tristan Conservation with a prioritised long-term management & eradication strategy, safeguarding natural habitats and vital agricultural land. This project is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds</para>

Tristanians will also lead on removal of all self-sown Monterey pine, a notorious invasive which is spreading from one planted timber stand into both pastureland and natural sites. A NZ-based invasive plant expert (Bradley Myer and Kelvin Floyd from Indigena Biosecurity International) will provide in-person safe herbicide training and eradication protocol / strategy development support, plus work alongside Tristanians to re-map and strategise around the other invasive plant species previously identified on Tristan itself. The project will also complete the final three years of eradication effort estimated required to remove all emergent flax plants within the known invaded area on Inaccessible Island, delivering one of the primary conservation management objectives for this UK World Heritage Site</para>
