Description

Exotic weed and pest species occurrence data collected by Environment Canterbury on public land areas around Canterbury.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 1,650 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Geographic Coverage

Public land sites in the Canterbury region

Bounding Coordinates South West [-50, -180], North East [-15, 150]

Sampling Methods

Weed and pest data is captured is captured by a few different ways in this dataset: Search (random chance encounter of a weed/pest), Inspection (going to a site that potentially has weeds/pests), Inspection & Control (going to a that potentially has weeds/pests and controlling that organism), Compliance (going to a site known to have weeds/pests), Monitor (monitoring known sites with weed/pest issues), Desktop (data not recorded in the field but transcribed into dataset).

Study Extent The study extent is region wide in Canterbury.
Quality Control Removed species in the original datasets that may be considered weedy but are native.

Method step description:

  1. This final dataset has been merged from three separate feature layers that are run by different teams in Environment Canterbury. Two of the datasets are biosecurity layers and one in a Land Ecology weeds layer. The datasets are merged in Arc GIS Pro by running an Arc GIS model that is designed to processes the data to get it ready to upload to GBIF.

Additional Metadata

This is not a complete ECan wide data set. Only the datasets that were readily available and fit for purpose were adapted to this dataset.

Purpose

To collect spatial data about weedy species in Canterbury and to inform control of specific organisms.

Maintenance Description Expected annual update but pending workload.
