プロジェクトデータ
The weed and wilding pine management project in the Management Unit D (MU D) of the Brook Conservation Reserve (BCR) was initiated in September 2023 as a three-year program. It forms part of a broader, multi-year ecological restoration initiative for the BCR and the wider Brook Valley Eastern Hills. The project emphasizes four main restoration strategies: pest plant control, ungulate hunting, pest animal control, and restoration planting. These strategies are designed to be implemented across the wider restoration area in a cohesive and connected approach. The overall restoration area covers 577 hectares and includes Tantragee, Atmore, and Eureka Park Landscape Reserves, as well as parts of the Brook Conservation Reserve. To support effective implementation, the area has been divided into 13 management units (A–M) based on factors such as proximity to the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary (BWS), vegetation types, and site-specific management needs. MU D has been identified as a high-priority unit for targeted pest plant and ungulate control because of its high ecological value and its role as an important buffer protecting indigenous flora and fauna in the adjacent Management Unit A, which borders the BWS. The primary objective of management in MU D is to reduce invasive pest plant populations – particularly vine weeds and wilding pines – to enhance indigenous forest diversity and support natural regeneration. These efforts also help protect the native flora and fauna in the adjacent fenced Brook Waimārama Sanctuary (BWS), by strengthening the ecological buffer provided by MU D. The programme is guided by the Forest Restoration Framework (FRF), a systematic, outcome-focused model developed by Kaitiaki o te Ngahere for both site-led and weed-led restoration projects. This framework categorises management areas or pest plant populations into distinct phases based on operational progress and the life stage of of target species, enabling strategic and adaptive intervention. In its first year, the project focused on the initial control of mature vine weeds and mapping of reproductive wilding pines across MU D. The second year prioritised the completion of initial control in key hotspots – particularly gullies and lower slopes – as well as pine control across the entire unit. The third year will focus on follow-up control of both mature and immature vines and pines, and targeted seedbank control on the upper slopes. Substantial progress has already been achieved over the first two years, significantly reducing pest plant impacts and advancing ecological restoration in MU D. The Forest Restoration Framework’s structured approach ensures that efforts build upon each other, moving the area towards reduced pest plant density and diversity, and improving the resilience of this ecologically valuable landscape against future incursions.

| ファンデイング | The project is funded by the Nelson City Council (NCC), which contracts Kaitiaki o Ngahere Ltd to undertake pest plant control operations in the Management Unit D (MU D) of the Brook Conservation Reserve. |
| Study Area Description | The managed area encompasses Management Unit D (MU D) of the Brook Conservation Reserve, located on the eastern edge of Nelson City. Covering 88.59 hectares, this management unit consists of mature indigenous forest—primarily beech and podocarp species—as well as regenerating native vegetation. It lies to the west of Fringed Hill and includes Bullock Spur, along with tributaries like Glen Creek and Cummins Creek, within an altitudinal range of approximately 300-675 metres asl. |
| 研究の意図、目的、背景など(デザイン) | The core of the design is the Forest Restoration Framework (FRF), which categorises management units or pest plant populations into distinct phases, typically progressing from Initial Control (mature plants present), Follow-up Control (addressing regrowth and seedlings after initial control), and Seedbank Control (focused on remaining seedlings) to eventually Forest Protection (surveillance for new incursions). Each phase involves different frequencies and intensities of control. The weed and wilding pine management project in MU D focuses on the first three phases. The approach uses a spatial polygon format for targeted work and performance monitoring. These polygons delineate specific areas or pest plant populations. Each polygon is assigned a FRF phase according to their pest plant status. This spatial approach enables targeted operations and efficient resource allocation. A crucial part of the design is the systematic collection of data. Tracklogs and point data are collected daily by field staff using GPS-enabled mobile platforms. This data builds a spatial database used for efficient, targeted control and informed decision-making. During control visits, field teams aim to systematically cover the designated polygons. This is achieved either by following pre-designed GPS gridlines or by spacing themselves at intervals that ensure adequate visual coverage, depending on the target species and the level of infestation. Any areas not fully covered during one visit are prioritized the following one. |
